To become president, Trump is listed at 8 to 1, behind only Hillary Clinton (1.1 to 1) and Jeb Bush (4 to 1), with Sanders tied for fourth-favorite along with Joe Biden and Marco Rubio at 14 to 1, according to Ladbrokes. Rival bookie Paddy Power has Trump at 13 to 2 to become president; Sanders 12 to 1.
Both Trump and Sanders were available at more than 100 to 1 earlier in the year.
“America fascinates Britain, as it’s an alternative vision of a similar society to ours that split off 200 years ago,” said professor David Hastings Dunn, head of the University of Birmingham’s political science and international studies department. “It offers a view of a parallel universe for Britain’s ideas and culture. We don’t always like the result, but we do like to watch it unfold.
    [….]
“America may be bigger and richer,” Dunn said, “but Britons get a sense of satisfaction from knowing that your politics are even more unproductive, vulgar and captured by special interest than ours.”

Hillary: GOP Extreme Views on Women What’s Expected from Terrorists
    Taylor Marsh
    http://www.taylormarsh.com/2015/08/hillary-gop-extreme-views-on-women-whats-expected-from-terrorists/#comment-40510
“CONSIDERING that Republicans in one state after another have purposefully and methodically targeted women for state interference, voting to inhibit a woman’s sovereignty over her own body, Clinton didn’t mince words.

“Now, extreme views about women, we expect that from some of the terrorist groups, we expect that from people who don’t want to live in the modern world, but it’s a little hard to take from Republicans who want to be the president of the United States,” Clinton said at a speech in Cleveland. “Yet they espouse out of date, out of touch policies. They are dead wrong for 21st century America. We are going forward, we are not going back.” [CNN]
The reaction from Republican 2016 candidates was swift. Reporting from CNN

“For Hillary Clinton to equate her political opponents to terrorists is a new low for her flailing campaign,” said Allison Moore, press secretary for the Republican National Committee. “She should apologize immediately for her inflammatory rhetoric.”

“Hillary Clinton just said a significant portion of Americans are the same as ‘terrorist groups’ simply because they disagree with her,” added Amelia Chassé, press secretary for America Rising PAC, an anti-Clinton opposition research group. “That is outrageous, even for a desperate politician slipping in the polls. It’s the clearest sign yet that Sec. Clinton will say or do anything to win.”
It should be noted that Hillary’s “flailing campaign” shows in polling that she can still beat every single Republican in the field.

Clinton doesn’t just “disagree” with Republicans. She’s willing to go to whatever lengths possible to oppose the right’s systematic dismantling of abortion rights that has been legal for decades.”

“In a scene that would have given Donald Trump heart palpitations, 200 flag-waving Mexican troops breached the U.S. border outside Laredo, Tex., 10 years ago and advanced unopposed up Interstate 35 to San Antonio.
It was the first time a Mexican army had marched on San Antonio since 1836 when Gen. Santa Ana massacred besieged Texas independence fighters at the Alamo.
This time, however, the Mexican soldiers were on a relief mission to feed tens of thousands of homeless and hungry Americans displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Setting up camp at a former Air Force base outside San Antonio, they distributed potable water, medical supplies and 7,000 hot meals a day for the next three weeks.”

JUDY WOODRUFF: Joe Biden, David, a lot of talk about whether he’s going to get in. He’s been meeting with the head of the Teamsters union. He met with the liberal darling Elizabeth Warren, Senator Warren. He’s got people advocating for him now at this big Democratic gathering in Minneapolis.
Do you think he’s going to get in?

    DAVID BROOKS: No.

    (LAUGHTER)

    DAVID BROOKS: No.

Well, first, God bless him for his resilience. The guy loses a son, and still wants to serve the country and still is emotionally strong enough to do it. I salute him. And — but — and he’s a wonderful man, and he’s a great public servant.

But what the country is in the mood for is anti-establishment. I think that’s one of the reasons Hillary Clinton and Jeb Bush are sailing into headwinds. Bernie Sanders has it. Donald Trump has it in spades. Joe Biden doesn’t have it.

And so whatever the problem is with the Clinton campaign, Joe Biden also has that problem. And so I think he will get a sense of that larger atmosphere, let alone the money and the organization and all that, and Hillary Clinton’s still formidable strength, really. And so my guess — it’s a guess shared by a lot of Democratic insiders — is that he won’t do it.

“Now of course, Mr. Trump also insults and dismisses women, and by the way, just yesterday he attacked me once again and said I didn’t have a clue about women’s health issues. Really?” she said in Minneapolis on Friday at the Democratic National Committee’s gathering. “I mean you can’t make this stuff up folks. Trump actually said he would do a much better job for women than I would. That’s a general election debate that is going to be a lots of fun.”

According to a new Quinniapiac University poll, two-thirds of women think Clinton cares about the needs and problems of women. For Trump, it’s less than a quarter. And for Bush, it’s 43%.

In the Democratic field, Clinton also has an edge. She leads Bernie Sanders on the empathy question among women voters by 25%. Her strident comments came as Democrats buzzed about a possible run by Biden, whose main argument would be his working class appeal. Yet Clinton still beats him on women’s issues by 11%.

Speaking before Democrats in Minneapolis, Clinton dedicated much of her speech to women’s issues, ticking off the positions of her Republican rivals. But she was also making an implicit argument to power-brokers in her own party, who are fielding appeals from Biden backers: nominate me and exploit the gender gap even more.

“And I know that when I talk like this some people think there she goes again with the women’s issues. Republicans actually say I am playing the gender card,” she said. “Well, if calling for equal pay and paid leave and women’s health is playing the gender card, deal me in.”

Camryn Colen, who is transgender, and his wife Alexis, who identifies as pan sexual, said Davis’ office provided the license on Feb. 26 without asking to see Camryn’s birth certificate, which still identifies him as female. The couple married that night.

Poll: Sanders Closes in on Clinton in Iowa
    By Taylor Marsh
    http://www.taylormarsh.com/2015/08/poll-sanders-closes-in-on-clinton-in-iowa/
Sanders gains on Clinton in Iowa according to latest poll.

“WHILE DONALD TRUMP has a wide lead among Republicans, Ben Carson slowly and steadily rises. On the Democratic side, Bernie Sanders continues to chip away at Clinton’s Iowa lead. Sanders is in first place in New Hampshire.

As I wrote before, whatever Clinton’s advantages were when she announced have been whittled away. That doesn’t mean she won’t be the nominee, but it does push Hillary to quit playing it so safe, listening tours, etc., and game up for the fall contest.

The first sign of this shift to offense was Clinton implying Republicans were acting like “terrorists” on women’s health. It not only made Republicans squeal like stuffed pigs, but changed the subject from the server/email story, which was part of the goal. At the DNC meeting she didn’t even mention the server issue and that’s where she wants to stay until it’s resolve, though it won’t be easy.

    DesMoines Register reporting

Liberal revolutionary Bernie Sanders, riding an updraft of insurgent passion in Iowa, has closed to within 7 points of Hillary Clinton in the Democratic presidential race.

She’s the first choice of 37 percent of likely Democratic caucusgoers; he’s the pick for 30 percent, according to a new Des Moines Register/Bloomberg Politics Iowa Poll.

But Clinton has lost a third of her supporters since May, a trajectory that if sustained puts her at risk of losing again in Iowa, the initial crucible in the presidential nominating contest.”
