And Then There Were 17

GOP Debate

At least eight of the positions are confirmed, but the last two to move up from the kid’s table to the main arena is still to be decided.  So far it looks like Christie and Kasich are movin’ on up while happy hour will feature Perry.  Lindsey Graham has recommended that we assume it’s 5:00 somewhere and start drinking early so we don’t care what the main event does.

Jamie, that “Lindsey Graham has recommended that we assume it’s 5:00 somewhere and start drinking early so we don’t care what the main event does” quote really endears me to him no matter how many times I’ve disagreed with him. similar sentiments noted at the following from
    http://www.bloomberg.com/politics/articles/2015-08-03/what-lindsey-graham-has-in-common-with-vikki-carr
Watching Graham get choked up each time he said how much he loved America and asked voters to “pick me,” I was reminded of her corny-in-a-good-way approach, as over-the-top in its lack of cynicism as Trump’s is in swimming in it.

In response to the final question, from someone who said that Republican candidates seem heartless in opposing Obamacare, he said, “When my mom got sick, it took me literally until I got out of the Air Force to pay the bills off.”

“I can’t believe I’m standing here in front of you running for president of the United States,” he went on, his voice breaking and eyes watering as he added that “I wish my mom and dad could be here. So, here’s the deal: I get it about health care, trust me, I do. I know what’s it’s like to lose everything because you get sick. I don’t want that…It’s all about us being in it together,” clenching his jaw in a way that looked like an attempt not to cry.

“I’ve been part of a military unit where everybody’s rowing the boat together…America, ma’am, is not a race, is not a religion, is not an ethnic background; it is an idea, that you can start with nothing and maybe even be president of the United States. I’ve fallen in love with this country,” he said in closing. “Help me if you can.”

yeah, I can see how lindsey reminds the Bloomberg reporter of carr about whom she said
“In the ’60s, a pop artist named Vikki Carr was singled out by Dean Martin as the best girl singer of her generation, and both Elvis and Sinatra went so far as to say she reminded them of themselves. Beyond her torchy voice, a lot of her appeal came from the fact that she clearly felt her material so intensely; she wasn’t just crying for effect every time she sang “With Pen in Hand,” but opened herself up all over again every time.”

Well, I have converted (almost) every light bulb in the house to LED. The only ones that weren’t changed-over were the decorative ones for which there isn’t a suitable match, and the bulbs with special sockets. Fortunately, all these are used relatively little.

The hardest task was switching out the fixtures in the kitchens. They are more than 12-feet above the floor. I did it, and the new all-in-ones look very smart. I tried putting new reflector bulbs in the old fixtures, but this looks much better.

The cost of dimmable bulbs has dropped dramatically and their quality has improved as well. All the old dimmable switches that I had for my incandescent bulbs work quite well with their LED counterparts. They wouldn’t work with dimmable CFLs. The new lights in the kitchen replaced dimmable CFLs–they are smoother and have a greater dimming range. All the lights have a color temp of 2700-deg–very pleasant.

I spent a couple of hours and multiple trips rummaging through the builders’ areas at Home Depot sourcing the stuff for this project. I found great markdowns in hidden out-of-the-way places. Rummaging and asking/begging is in order. For ordinary lamp fixtures, their going rate is two 60-watt-equivalent Philips bulbs for $4.95. That’s an excellent price for a bulb that looks just like and old fashioned light bulb. I managed to get the kitchen fixtures with bulbs for $12-bucks a piece. I was lucky.

Now, what the devil do I do with all my old bulbs??

Of course yo could keep a few as spares when tthe 10,000 CFLs burn out in a couple of months – and I find that mine do if they’re in frequently used applications.

The Washington Post first reported that the FBI was looking into Clinton’s private email set up during her time as Secretary of State, particularly the security used to protect information on the server that Clinton housed at her Chappaqua, New York, home. In a statement to CNN, Kendall confirmed that report.
“Quite predictably, after the IC (intelligence community) IG (inspector general) made a referral to ensure that materials remain properly stored, the government is seeking assurance about the storage of those materials,” Kendall said in a statement.
Kendall added that he and his client were “actively cooperating” with the inquiry….

so wouldn’t it be a hoot for fbi to find out that her system was more secure (given all the dos stuff that was later released in the wiki leaks). not a far-fetched notion as it seems reasonable that an email system installed at a former prez residence would be super secure.

“(CNN)Overlooked in the controversy over Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server, is the fact that suspected Russian hackers have bedeviled State Department’s email system for much of the past year and continue to pose problems for technicians trying to eradicate the intrusion.

“Federal law enforcement, intelligence and congressional officials briefed on the investigation say the hack of the State email system is the “worst ever” cyberattack intrusion against a federal agency. The attackers who breached State are also believed to be behind hacks on the White House’s email system, and against several other federal agencies, the officials say.”

      That was in March.

      Or this:

      http://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/10/world/asia/chinese-hackers-pursue-key-data-on-us-workers.html?_r=0

“Chinese hackers in March broke into the computer networks of the United States government agency that houses the personal information of all federal employees, according to senior American officials. They appeared to be targeting the files on tens of thousands of employees who have applied for top-secret security clearances.

“The hackers gained access to some of the databases of the Office of Personnel Management before the federal authorities detected the threat and blocked them from the network, according to the officials. It is not yet clear how far the hackers penetrated the agency’s systems, in which applicants for security clearances list their foreign contacts, previous jobs and personal information like past drug use.”

      Last July. Or this:

Now, this is news. From our local party in South Carolina:

“You don’t want to miss the Richland County Democratic Party’s August Breakfast on Saturday, August 22! I just received confirmation that James Carville will be our special guest. That’s right—the one and only James Carville. It just so happens that he will be in the Palmetto state on behalf of the Hillary for America campaign and we are fortunate enough to have him as our breakfast speaker.”

For those who have a fondness for The Economist, there’s a really interesting feature about it on page one of the Business Section of today’s NYT. On the same page you can also learn more than you ever wanted to know about ‘Happy Birthday’

Jamie, sorry for the bandwidth violation above, but sometimes it takes a little extra to get a point across.

” Stock up on beverages and …” Jamie, I need your permission. As an exception to policy, while adult beverages are hardly appropriate for an event of tonight’s magnitude, they are essential for my well-being. Please, oh, please…

Flatus, Given the probable content of the show, I will do my best to remain conscious for the main event but it isn’t all that likely as I’m sure to be waylaid by one or more phrases to chug a lug.
