Sunday Sweet Sunday

By Trailmix tradition, this is the day for great music and commentary on all the Sunday shows.  So have at it gang.  Somebody must have said something that is forcing you to cheer or throw bricks at the TV screen.

“Donald Trump, finally a candidate whose hair gets more attention than mine,” Clinton quipped at a Democratic dinner here. “But there’s nothing funny about the hate he is spewing at immigrants and families — and now the insults he has directed at a genuine war hero, Sen. John McCain.

“It’s shameful, and so is the fact that it took so long for his fellow Republican candidates to start standing up to him,” she said. “The sad truth is if you look at many of their policies, it can be hard to tell the difference.”

    also sweet were lindsey’s tweets
“If there was ever any doubt that @realDonaldTrump should not be our commander in chief, this stupid statement should end all doubt,” Graham said. “If there was ever any doubt that he should not be the #GOP standard bearer, his growing mountain of stupid statements should end all doubt.”

13 budget items on the GOP’s chopping block, made simple
    byKerry Eleveld
“Domestic spending? Screw that. It’s for wimps!
Republicans want more Defense money so they can bomb stuff. Democrats are like, “Whoa—hold on, dude.” If the only place the GOP will drop some dough is on the military, Democrats are threatening to block the whole budget (i.e. all 13 appropriations bills). If the two sides can’t broker a deal by September 30—even if it’s just a Continuing Resolution—no one gets anything and the government shuts down.

Jay Newton-Small details 13 of the most contentious cuts the GOP wants to make, re-interpreted below as a simplified budgeting schema.”

Always get a kick out of the straight men’s fear of gay men when straight women just shrug their shoulders over the idea of having a lesbian for a teacher or friend. I’ve decided the straight guys think the gay guys are going to treat them the way many straight guys treat women.

      • Tony says:

I think your so spot on here.. I have seen straight men fear us gay men all my life.So many are just closets. Just saying women really are the better sex.:0)

I’ve been playing with the new Apple Music program. Starting to figure it out and really enjoying the vast selection of music. I only need about 9 more pairs of ears and a few additional lifetimes to get around to sampling all the genres I enjoy.

  17. Flatus says:

I didn’t pick-up yesterday’s mail until a few minutes ago because of the big 4-inch rain that we had as the poor carrier made her rounds. I was shocked by our electric bill–$417.77 for 30-days. And they want to raise the rates the rates again because of delays in the building of a nuclear plant.

I’m in better shape than many because we own our house free and clear. My ‘free-for-life’ medical care seldom costs more than $200 a month. My primary sources of income are my VA disability which is subtracted dollar-for-dollar from military retirement. And, I have my social security, too. Every year I’m required to take a formula-imposed amount from our IRAs. This takes care of our property taxes and major insurance bills. But, at the same time, it reduces the amount of money that I can pass on for my heirs, the ones who will really be in a pinch.

I suppose I could get rid of the high-speed internet, cancel the Times and Journal as well as the electronic WaPo and Tampa Bay Times. And the dozen magazines that I get but have trouble seeing to read. And I could sell Rosie and get something practical like a Studebaker. And kick Jasper out and close off the rooms on his side of the house. And stop buying clothes off-the-rack for kids at Sue’s school. Or skip the donations to the good causes I support.

I don’t go out to eat. I’m content having a Lunchable for dinner. A single cold Yeungling is a delight. A hug and an “I love you” from Sue brings incredible warmth to my heart. And neighbors stopping by checking on me is nice.

flatus, your electric bill is $417.77 for 30-days? have you had (assuming your utility co provides them for free as they should) an energy audit where they check your insulation, appliances, windows and such for efficiency? maybe a new fangled fridge or heat pump or led this or that would nelp. wintertime an extra layer of clothes can do the trick but summer…. not much one can take off without being hauled off.

  19. divalicias says:

Flatus — is it just the electric bill? Or electric and gas? I’m amazed when I compare the electric bills for my house in Virginia and my mother’s house in Maryland. My house is so much bigger than mom’s house, but my electric bill is less than half and my house is all-electric. Maybe you could call the electric company and see if there’s anything you can do to reduce your cost. I really reduced our electric bill by changing out our light bulbs to LEDs. I’m doing a few at a time. Also, when I replaced the heat pump I saw the bill drop dramatically. Unplug all your power vampires too. Call the power company and see if there is a discount for allowing them to adjust your A/C use.

  20. patd says:

flatus, diva is soooo right about heat pumps. an extra thick layer of insulation in the attic and emrgy star windows really do the job. not only cuts down unwanted heat but also unwanted noise.

  21. the donald will have trouble finding a running mate— he has called most members of the gop morons

Hi KGC! — I haven’t posted on TM for a while now since I couldn’t figure out all the tricks with the bells and whistles. I’ve been reading and lurking all this time. So while I’m sorry that TM as we know it has been pulled for a spam hiatus, I’m happy it’s continuing here with Jamie’s blog.

  22. Flatus says:

All of our bulbs have been changed to something more efficient with many failures along the way either because of color, brightness, inability to dim, false advertising, etc.. Our weather the past month has been brutally hot. Accurate measurements of 105 in the afternoons have not been unusual. Along with that, we have large windows overlooking our jungle, a major reason for being where we are. Our hvac is inspected and serviced twice a year. I change filters in-between scheduled inspections. Heat and hot water is gas (about 20-bucks a month minimum included in the bill).

Our rates are brutally high $0.15/kwh. We are captives of a Republican public utilities commission. Diva, when we were in Florida, we let them control the power to the a/c and water heater. Had to take the a/c off because we were right on the Gulf and it was really too hot, but not having the H2O was not a problem. FWIW, I keep the house at 80-deg and have ceiling fans all over.

Pat, we do have the items you enumerated inspected regularly. John, our a/c man would get a hefty commission if he were to sell us a new system. He says we have several more years of useful service left in the system we have and recommends we not change it yet.

    • Tony says:

Oh man, that’s a terrible power bill.. Flatus, only keep the ceiling fans on if your setting undernealth them.. Cools the skin only by 3 degrees.. Fans will not cool the house.. Florida Power and light says the average fan running 24/7 would cost $8 a month.. Also i have changed all my bulbs to LED.. They make them in dimmable and non.. The LED dimmable work great.. Walmart has them cheap.. The CFL dimmable were a joke.. My FPL bill last month with the pool and hotub was $167..
