5 On Friday – It Happens Every Spring

Dodger 5

Five On Friday is the meme invented by our friend Travis of Trav’s Thoughts.  To join in on the fun, simply pick five songs, sign in on his site, and share your choices.

As anyone who knows me will tell you, I AM A DODGER FAN – I bleed Dodger blue so this time of year is pure joy. Just to get us all in the mood for the game that was made for lazy days and sunshine … a few baseball songs.

And just for my beloved Dodgers and my favorite year of Kofax & Drysdale – Danny Kaye

Love the videos! A subject near & dear to my heart. A lifelong baseball fan and rabid Red Sox fan! As a young girl I vividly remember when the Dodgers moved to California. I think it was the first time I ever heard of a team leaving it’s “home” and I couldn’t understand it. Since I couldn’t like the Yankees 😉 I liked the Dodgers and Duke Snider…(although, if pressed I liked Mickey Mantel & Whitey Ford because they were cute)
This might be too long but…….
Since you like history & baseball I thought you might enjoy this: http://youtu.be/jR4tTQVjHUI
Over 100 years ago the Royal Rooters club (RedSoxNation now) led by a guy named McGreevy rallied the Red Sox with the song and we took up the new version as our anthem in 2004.
    Lyrics: Dropkick Murphys – Tessie
Tessie is the Royal Rooters rally cry
Tessie is the tune they always sung
Tessie echoed April through October nights
After serenading Stahl, Dinneen and Young
Tessie is a maiden with a sparkling eye
Tessie is a maiden with a love
She doesn’t know the meaning of her sight
She’s got a comment full of love

And sometimes when the game is on the line
    Tessie always carried them away
Up the road from “Third Base” to Huntington
The boys will always sing and sway

    Two! Three! Four!

    Tessie, “Nuf Ced” McGreevey shouted
We’re not here to mess around
Boston, you know we love you madly
Hear the crowd roar to your sound
Don’t blame us if we ever doubt you
You know we couldn’t live without you
Tessie, you are the only only only

The Rooters showed up at the grounds one day
They found their seats had all been sold
McGreevey led the charge into the park
Stormed the gates and put the game on hold
The Rooters gave the other team a dreadful fright
Boston’s tenth man could not be wrong
Up from “Third Base” to Huntington
    They’d sing another victory song

    Two! Three! Four!

    Tessie, “Nuf Ced” McGreevey shouted
We’re not here to mess around
Boston, you know we love you madly
Hear the crowd roar to your sound
Don’t blame us if we ever doubt you
You know we couldn’t live without you
Tessie, you are the only only only

Boston, you are the only only only
Don’t blame us if we ever doubt you
You know we couldn’t live without you
Red Sox, you are the only only only
There is a lot of history in the song which you can read more about here in interested:

  2. Wow! Frankie totally held his own with Gene Kelly! And Gene was brave enough to sing with Old Blue Eyes. What a team.

Hope doth spring eternal. Our Dodgers aren’t off to a great start, but I did like the Opening Day shut out of those stoopid Giants.
